The city of Springfield is launching the Springfield Minority Business Institute, a new multi-week educational initiative that will begin in February. The program is designed to support minority-owned businesses and nonprofit organizations through targeted instruction, access to resources and meaningful networking opportunities.
Classes will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in February and March. The program will conclude with an April 1 graduation ceremony at University of Illinois Springfield.
During the first three weeks, participants will receive instruction led by city of departments, including the Office of Planning and Economic Development (OPED), Building and Zoning and Purchasing. The Springfield Urban League will lead a discussion on Feb. 25. These sessions will provide valuable insight into city processes, compliance requirements and opportunities for engagement with municipal government.
“The Springfield Minority Business Institute reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for all entrepreneurs to succeed,” said Mayor Misty Buscher. “By connecting minority-owned businesses and nonprofits with the tools, knowledge and relationships they need, we are strengthening our local economy and investing in the future of our community.”
Minority business owners and nonprofit organizers interested in participating should contact the Office of Community Relations at 217-789-2270 or email Shaun Reidell at shaun.reidell@springfield.il.us.
