The popular but controversial Uber ridesharing service may soon expand to Springfield.

Uber ran advertisements online this week seeking drivers in Springfield. It’s a likely indication that the company is expanding outside of only large markets like Chicago.

Uber spokeswoman Lauren Altmin told Illinois Times that the company is looking to expand in cities across Illinois, and they have already spoken with the City of Springfield about offering service here.

Uber works by having private individuals use their cars like taxi cabs. Drivers and riders are coordinated through a smartphone application, enabling drivers to be more nimble than most traditional taxi companies. Uber and similar services like Lyft have angered taxi companies because ridesharing prices are generally cheaper than taxis, but without the strict regulations taxis must follow.

The Illinois General Assembly on Dec. 3 passed Senate Bill 2774, a bill regulating rideshare services. Uber touted the bill on its blog as “a compromise bill that prioritizes rider safety while preserving transportation choices and economic opportunity for drivers.”

Drivers for Uber in Springfield could earn $20 per hour, the advertisement says. To qualify, drivers must be at least 21 years old, own a vehicle 2005 or newer and have a driver’s license and insurance.
