DEAD MEN TALKING

Sister Helen Prejean, spiritual advisor to death-row
prisoners, talks about capital punishment at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in
the Kirkland Fine Arts Center, on the campus of Millikin University.
Prejean is the author of Dead Man Walking and The Death of Innocents. Before Prejean’s appearance in Decatur,
Springfield’s First Church of the Brethren will screen the film Dead Man Walking, the 1995 film
featuring Susan Sarandon as Prejean and Sean Pean as convicted murderer
Matthew Poncelet. The show begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the
church’s meetinghouse, 2115 Yale Blvd.

GET EDUCATED, BE SECURE

Loretta Meeks, professor of teacher education at the
University of Illinois at Springfield, and Ruth Sweetser, president of the
American Association of University Women, are featured speakers at the
Springfield AAUW’s annual fall coffee, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept.
10. Sweetser, who will discuss education and economic security for women,
is a native of Lombard, Ill. The coffee will be held in the restaurant of
the UIS Public Affairs Center. AAUW membership is open to women who hold a
degree from a regionally accredited institution. Undergraduate students
enrolled in regionally accredited two- or four-year institutions are
eligible for a student-affiliate membership. For more information, contact

PEACE AND PALESTINE

Pax Christi Springfield hosts the visit of veteran
peacemaker the Rev. Peter Dougherty for two events that are open to the
public. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in the main branch of Lincoln
Library, Dougherty presents a program on his recent experiences in Gaza.
From 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, Dougherty is the presenter of a
training workshop on nonviolence, held in Seina Hall at Sacred Heart
Convent, 1237 W. Monroe St. The deadline to register for the training is
