State Journal-Register cartoonist Chris Britt, who could single-handedly fills the daily’s letters page with the amount of hate mail he enkindles, apparently gets a better reception outside Springpatch.
One of his simpler panels, featuring U.S. Defense Secretary/silver-tongued devil Donald Rumsfeld looking lonely under the mistletoe — appeared last Sunday in New York Times.
A few weeks earlier, one of his ‘toons popped up on the CCTV program “World Insight.” CCTV is a sort of Chinese version of CNN. Once a week, “World Insight” shows a small assortment of political cartoons from around the world.
BACK IN THE U.S.A.
When the Dickson family was featured in our Oct. 21 cover story “Beloved soldier,” mom Leslie Dickson was using every talisman she could find to keep her 23-year-old son Matt safe during his second tour of duty in Iraq.
“I have a lot of little charms, do a lot of praying, have a lot of faith,” she said at the time.
It may not have worked quite the way she wanted. On Dec. 22, Matt was injured so severely he was flown back to the U.S. for medical care.
Matt is a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve 6th Engineering Support Battalion based in Peoria.
GETTING ON THE BUS
The Sangamon County Board has added its two cents to Springfield’s ongoing evening busing debate. In a letter dated Dec. 13 to the Springfield Mass Transit District Board of Trustees, the county board calls for SMTD to “examine the concept of providing evening mass transit services.”
Currently buses stop running at 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and don’t run at all on Sundays. The county board appoints the SMTD’s board of trustees.
