Steve Stirmell, a Jerome police officer who is the son of Jerome Mayor Harry
Stirmell, is under investigation by the Sangamon County state’s attorney and the
state attorney general, according to numerous sources.

The nature of the investigation isn’t clear. But a source who spoke on condition of
anonymity says that Steven Stirmell has been removed from active duty.

Steven Stirmell could not be reached for comment. His father, who is police
commissioner for the village in addition to serving as mayor, declined to discuss the
case.

“I can’t talk to you,” Harry Stirmell said. “It’s a personnel issue. … I’m the mayor and
the police commissioner. I’ve been told not to discuss it.”

Sangamon County state’s attorney John Milhiser said that his office is investigating
a Jerome police officer, but would not provide a name or any further details. Natalie
Bauer, spokeswoman for attorney general Lisa Madigan, said that her office is
assisting the state’s attorney with the investigation.

Dan Fultz, a prominent Springfield criminal defense attorney, confirmed that he has
been retained to represent Steven Stirmell, but would not provide any details.
