Greetings, my fellow tune-sters. We all know how this works with live music in and out, all around, up and down, just about everywhere and anywhere you’d like it to be, so let’s get to searching for what’s out there and when it’s happening.
Thursdays start with some downtown action as Third Thursdays Jazz at Buzz Bomb has the Jose Gobbo Trio taking it to the streets (Adams, that is), while Casey Cantrall hosts the monthly open mic at Bloom Wine Bar. Out south at the Curve Inn, those Suns of Beaches dock their yacht rock sound, while west across Sixth Street, Al and Kathy Kitchen clean up at Mother Road Diner.
I’ll take a moment here to remind our readers that at the stroke of midnight on Sept. 22 (that’s this coming Monday), voting closes for our popular (and the OG) Best of Springfield annual contest. The overall listings can be overwhelming in sheer numbers, but feel free to dive into the music section at least and vote for your favorite local stars. I’ve had more than a few wins (thanks for your support) and it sure feels good to be acknowledged for work done on any and every level. This year’s reader picks will be announced in the Oct. 30 issue followed by the Best of Springfield Party at the BOS Center that evening with music by Deja Voodoo. Go to the IT website and it’s easy enough to do your civic duty.
Friday is shaping up to be a real treat in showcasing area artists with acoustic acts and rock bands well represented. Look for guys with guitars such as Silas Tockey at The Railyard, Micah Walk at Bloom Wine Bar, Tom & Geoff at Pease’s, Rod Grant at the Alamo, plus OAT upstairs at Harvest Market and Devin C. Williams (back from his Belgium tour) at Legendary Small Town Trading Co. in Taylorville.
Bands on the run include Chris Camp and his Blues Ambassadors at Lime Street, Brandy Kristin Band at Weebles, Capt. Quirk at Long Bridge Golf Course, Sushi Roll at the Curve Inn, Broken Stone at Blue Grouch, Sera Monstera at The Bird, Wowie Zowie at Mowie’s Cue (boy, do I love to say that one) and Smokestacks at Goodfellas, while Hipbone & the Joints light up at Down the Street in Mason City and The Get Down does Locals in Pawnee. For concert-level stuff, it’s the Kentucky Headhunters at Danenberger Family Vineyards for a party on the prairie.
Saturday is more of the same in a good way all over town with special cultural mention going to Skibbereen for a halfway to St. Pat’s Day show at George Rank’s and Buzz Bomb celebrating our second Oktoberfest of the season featuring music by The Goddamn Gallows, Coleman Williams, Jayke Orvis & The Bullshit Bros, Master Bastard, Leech Off Society and Hessian Lord with Drunken Goblins performing the after-show show. For concert time, Joe Stamm Band with guest Brody Vancil hit the mighty fine stage at Twisted Tree in Jacksonville.
Sunday is still the original funday where the usual suspects abound like The Tangents at Brookhills and Frank’s Jambalaya Jazz Jam at Brewhaus and the Fantastical Folk Jam at Buzz Bomb. Complete the deal with specialty items such as Candy Foster & the Shades of Blue as a ticketed event at the Curve Inn and Logan’s Homegrown Cigar Box Guitar Festival in Palmyra at the Vixen Hill Winery with music by Brandon Elliott, Cigar Box Scott, Lil’ Higgy & His One Man Swamp Boogie Band, Mark “The Harp” LeClaire and Cody & the Chameleons, plus plenty of cigar box guitars just hanging around.
That does it from here. Until next week…
