As our community gathers around dinner tables and living rooms this Thanksgiving week, it is impossible not to reflect on the transformative strength and generosity that define our community. Gratitude is woven into the fabric of United Way. Our neighbors consistently show up for one another, especially in moments of need. We are privileged to witness this giving spirit every day, and this season offers a meaningful opportunity to pause and acknowledge the passionate people and partners who make this work possible.

Thanksgiving is traditionally a time for appreciation, but the gratitude we feel at United Way stretches beyond just one single holiday. It is grounded in the countless stories of resilience and hope we encounter throughout the year. Your support stabilizes families after crisis, gives opportunities to children, and connects older adults to the community and vital services. These moments are not coincidences; they are the result of a community that believes in creating opportunities for everyone.

Our work focuses on four interconnected impact areas that form the roots of a thriving community: youth opportunity, financial security, healthy community, and community resiliency. Your support alongside other donors, volunteers, and partner organizations ensures that local families have pathways to opportunity.

Enhancing community resiliency is the heart of United Way’s mission. Every day, families across Sangamon and Menard counties face the uncertainty of food insecurity, the challenge of finding safe shelter, or the fear of navigating a financial emergency alone. United Way supports programs that keep households stable by providing food, transportation, and crisis response. A huge part of that is access to our 211 24/7 resource line. When people know they have somewhere to turn, hope becomes a reality.

We also know that a strong community begins with strong kids. United Way directs significant investment toward youth programs that foster learning and readiness for the future. Our investments help young people stay engaged, safe, and inspired. Your donation to United Way is creating long term success and strengthening our community’s future workforce and leadership.

Financial security is another pillar of United Way’s mission. Many working families fall into the ALICE category (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). These households are earning above the federal poverty level but still unable to afford the basics due to the rising cost of living. United Way’s investments support these individuals and families especially in the financial security focus area. These investments help individuals increase their income, build stability, and move toward independence. A community thrives when all of its members have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

United Way also emphasizes the importance of a healthy community. This focuses on mental, physical, emotional and social well-being. United Way invests in programs that support aging adults, expands community wellness services and helps families manage life’s daily challenges. A healthy community is one where individuals feel connected, supported, and equipped to navigate both triumphs and hardships. When people feel healthy, physically and mentally, they increase the overall wellbeing of our community.

As we reflect on this work during Thanksgiving week, we are especially grateful for the partners whose generosity sustains these investments all year round. This year, we extend our deepest appreciation to Memorial Health and Heartland Coca-Cola, our 2025 Gratitude Sponsors. Their commitment is a testament to our shared belief in strengthening lives, improving outcomes, and lifting our community.

Thanksgiving reminds us that even in challenging times, gratitude can guide us forward. It reminds us that when we unite around a shared purpose, we can create meaningful and transformative change. We continue to be humbled by the generosity and partnership of this community. We are grateful for the businesses, nonprofits, civic leaders, volunteers, and donors who continue to stand with us in ensuring that everyone can thrive.

From all of us at United Way, thank you for your compassion, commitment, and your belief in the power of community. May this Thanksgiving bring warmth, reflection and a renewed sense of hope for the season ahead.
