New Potatoes

The
new potatoes are rough and shaggy,
Bearded with dirt, mountain men,

Or 49ers, surely. But when I wash them
They scrub up rosy, like
round-cheeked
Debutantes, a hint of white flesh
Peeking out from
their flimsy jackets.
