• Tony Bennett is bringing his large intestine, his small intestine,
his liver, and all of his other organs — except his heart, which remains in
San Francisco — to the fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis on Saturday, Oct. 16.
On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the Fox hosts R.E.M., simultaneously the world’s most hated
and most loved rock band. Bennett’s crooning some tunes; R.E.M. is doing whatever
the hell it wants.
• The Adaskin String Trio, named after a legendary Canadian music family,
is renowned as one of the most notable purveyors of chamber music in North America.
Like any good band, the classical power trio, which consists of a violin, viola,
and cello, nails the classics to the wall, pulls out a few contemporary pieces,
and uncovers works written exclusively for the group. The stringed wonders perform
at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in the Rammelkamp Chapel at Illinois College in
Jacksonville as part of the McGaw Fine Arts Series.
• The Fall Music Brownbag at the University of Illinois in Springfield
rolls into room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus on
Wednesday, Oct. 20. The event features the UIS Band, UIS Chamber Ensemble, and
UIS Chorus, all composed of community members and UIS students, faculty, and
staff who donate their time to making music. Bring along your lunch; the concert
starts at noon.
• The Midwest World Fest bestows another international musical gem on
our sleepy prairie capital next Thursday, Oct. 21, when Chuchumbé, a son
jarocho group from southern Veracruz, Mexico, presents a community concert
at 7:30 p.m. in the Southeast High School auditorium. The show, coordinated
through the efforts of the Springfield Area Arts Council and Public School District
No. 186, features a form of fast tap dancing known as zapateado, backed
by jazz-influenced fandango. Get your tickets ($5 per family) at the SAAC office
in the Hoogland Center for the Arts or call 217-753-3519.
• Join five singing, guitar-slinging women for “Sisters of Song” from
7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Julie Kluge’s intimate Sun’s Up Koffee Kafe
in the old A&P store on the corner of First and Calhoun streets. The concert
features the terrific talents of Angie Heaton and Joni Laurence of Champaign
and locals Jill Benoit, Sara Schneider, and Jill Manning.
