Raised on a hog farm outside of Springfield with classic country music as a life soundtrack, and now a retired U.S. Marine back home, Kyle Gass got into the performance side of music not that long ago. When local music hero Butch Ramelow heard Kyle was learning to play, he coaxed him onto the stage for a song during a show at the Buckhart Tavern. That’s when KG got the title of the Buckhart Kid, later honing his musical chops between sets of the Wolf Crick Boys. Now out playing the honky tonks and bars in full band mode, Kyle “the Kid” (vocals, acoustic guitar) has an all-star group of Greg “Lucky” Patterson (drums), Jay Larson (electric guitar, banjo), Ryan Pulver (bass) and Brian Steinhauer (mandolin) playing up a Midwestern thunderstorm behind him. Expect a few classic Hank Sr. songs, as well as plenty of originals penned by Mr. Gass, with titles such as “Shaheen’s Speedway,” “Ass Beating” and “Prairie’s End.” Summer plans include more gigs with recording studio time in the near future.
