Everyone likes a winner

To the editor:
Last Sunday the State Journal-Register picked a Democrat as their choice for mayor.
Last Monday I got up early to watch the sun rise in the West!

Opportunity knocks

Dear editor,
I want to thank Pete Sherman for his excellent article on District #186 and the School Board Candidates [“The Other Election,” March 27]. This article did a very good job of telling the story of the District and provided much information on the school board candidates.

Springfield has a tremendous opportunity to change the ways that it conducts business. We are going to have a new Mayor who will focus on improving the entire city, we have a new District Superintendent who has already shown that she is serious about doing things differently, and we will have a passionate, high energy school board that has promised to conduct business in a more open manner.

Let’s take advantage of this crossroads event and all get involved to make Springfield into the city that it should be.

Students against sweatshops

To the editor:
Students at the University of Illinois at Springfield have recently formed one of the newest chapters of United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS), an international movement fighting for sweatshop-free labor conditions and workers’ rights.

The majority of clothing sold at universities–including UIS–are made by sweatshop workers. Sweatshops are factories that exploit people with wages that leave families hungry, bust unions, have unsafe working conditions, and show a brazen disregard for human rights and dignity. Many people are working for less than the living wage, both here and abroad.

The UIS chapter of USAS believes that university standards should be brought in line with those of its students, who demand that their school’s logo is emblazoned on clothing made in decent working conditions. We demand that our universities adopt ethically and legally strong codes of conduct, full public disclosure of company information, and truly independent verification systems to ensure that sweatshop conditions are not happening.

On Thursday, April 3, students will hold a rally at 7:30 p.m. in the UIS Pit, next to the cafeteria. Associate Chancellor Ed Wojinski will give a speech regarding the administration’s position. There will be food and refreshments.
