As the holiday season approaches, United Way of Central Illinois is gearing up to spread joy, compassion and support throughout our community. This time of year brings unique opportunities to connect with others and give back, and United Way has organized several impactful initiatives for the season. Whether it’s bringing cheer to seniors, supporting local families, promoting literacy, or donating to strengthen our community, United Way invites everyone to make a difference this holiday season.
Holiday cards for seniors: Send warm wishes to local seniors
The holiday season can be a lonely time for many seniors, especially those who may not have family nearby or the resources to connect socially. United Way’s “Holiday Cards for Seniors” program is an effort to share warmth and kindness with these cherished members of our community. Community members are invited to write heartfelt messages on holiday cards for local seniors, a small gesture that can make a big impact. Cards can be dropped off at the United Way office, located at 1999 Wabash Ave, Suite 107, Springfield, until Dec. 13.
Our seniors are such a valuable part of our community, and this is a simple but powerful way to show we care. We encourage everyone – families, workplaces, schools, and individuals – to take a moment and write a card. Let’s fill their season with love and joy.
Christmas Wishes Campaign with Capitol Media Group
For those interested in going even further to help local families, United Way has teamed up with Capitol Media Group for the Christmas Wishes campaign. This initiative allows community members to nominate families in need, helping to ensure that holiday wishes come true for those facing hardships. Whether it’s holiday gifts, clothing, or essential items, this campaign brings holiday cheer to families who might otherwise go without.
To participate, visit United Way’s website at uwcil.org/christmas-wish where you’ll find the nomination form and donation options. Every dollar donated will help make a family’s holiday a little brighter.
Christmas Wishes is a wonderful collaboration that truly embodies the spirit of giving. By nominating families and donating to this cause, you can directly impact families in need right here in our community.
Boost literacy with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
A key part of United Way’s mission is promoting early literacy, and through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, local children can receive free books every month from birth to age five. This holiday season, United Way has set a goal to increase enrollments by 250 children, which will bring the joy of reading to even more young minds in our community.
Reaching this goal is especially important this season because it qualifies United Way for a special reward of two months of paid book invoices. Covering these invoices would save the organization around $5,000 – resources that could then be directed to other essential programs. Signing up is easy, and families interested in enrolling their children can find more details on the United Way website.
Books open doors to learning and imagination. Every child deserves the chance to develop a love of reading. The Imagination Library helps us make that possible, and with your support, we can bring books into the lives of even more children.
Give to United Way and “Ignite the Future” for central Illinois
During this season of giving, United Way encourages the community to consider donating to support the wide range of programs that make a meaningful difference year-round. The theme “Ignite the Future” reflects the powerful impact that contributions have on United Way’s initiatives, from education and financial stability to health and emergency assistance.
Each donation plays a role in strengthening our community. Donations support literacy programs like the Imagination Library, provide assistance to local seniors, and fund vital programs that empower individuals and families to succeed. In times of hardship and uncertainty, United Way offers a steady source of support for central Illinois.
Here’s why giving matters:
• Education: Funding literacy and education programs helps ensure every child in central Illinois has access to the tools they need to succeed in school and life.
• Financial stability: Contributions support programs that help individuals achieve financial independence, providing a foundation for a stable and self-sufficient future.
• Health and well-being: United Way invests in initiatives that promote health and well-being, from mental health support to access to nutritious food.
• Community resilience: Donations enable United Way to respond quickly in times of crisis, such as natural disasters or economic downturns, providing assistance to those who need it most.
As we move into the new year, we’re committed to continuing our work to make central Illinois a place where everyone can thrive. Donations help us ‘ignite the future’ and ensure that our programs can continue reaching those who need them most.
