Rock fiends
A cult following and hardcore lyrics are all The
Misfits need to rock a show. Performing hits like “American
Psycho” and “Monster Mash,” the classic three-chord
progression of The Misfits is sure to set Springfield on fire. The band was
formed in Lodi, N.J., in 1977. They resurrected from a 10-year breakup to
come back and rock better than before. The aggression of original bassist
Jerry Only coupled with being voted 91 in VH1’s “100 Greatest
Artists of Hard Rock,” makes The Misfits immortal on the punk scene.

Big dreams
Big city lights, money and men are enough to lead any
small town girl astray and into the excitement of 1920s night life. This
weekend The Springfield Theatre Centre presents the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie. The
show follows Millie Dillmount, a girl whose dreams are too big for the
small town of Salina, Kan. Headstrong and donning a new look, she moves to
New York City, with the intention to marry for money. Instead of the good
life, Millie gets trouble. Her high-swinging flapper days come to a halt
when she gets mixed up with the wrong crowd and learns true love
doesn’t come with a $1 million check.

Art emissaries
When local residents were fed up with wishing
something would be done about trouble abroad, they realized change starts
at home. Local artists and The Land of Lincoln-Advocate for Darfur are
using their talents to aid the victims of genocide in Sudan. The
Art-for-Dar-Fur fundraiser will help purchase solar stoves for Darfur
refugee camps. More than 20 local artists are contributing pieces to be
included in the sale and silent auction. Guests can bid on work by Linda
Post-Lucas, Pam Miller, Gerry Erley and more. Sheri Ramsey, painter and
spokes person for Land of Lincoln-Advocate for Darfur will be raffling off
her original pastel painting valued at $900. Sculptures by Jeff
Garland and Darren Miller will be featured in the sculpture walk around
Ramsey Pond. The event will also include authentic African music and
cuisine.

Flat adventures
When a small boy turns a mishap into the adventure of
a lifetime, music and laughter follow. The
Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, is a
musical about Stanley Lambchop, who is flattened when the bulletin board
above his bed falls on him. Stanley turns lemons into lemonade and uses his
new figure to have some fun. He learns how to slide under doors, becomes a
champ at hide-and-seek and even lets his friends turn him into a flying
kite. Boredom sets in and Stanley decides he wants to take the biggest
adventure of all. So, he slips inside a big envelope and travels the world
as a human letter. Pre-show activities include mask making, a dance
presentation by the Springfield Youth Performance Group and more.
