Performing arts

Hoogland Center for the Arts
420 S. Sixth St.
The Hoogland Center for the Arts is a magnet for both practitioners and supporters of the arts, housing 18 different arts organizations with four performance sites, two art galleries and meeting space galore. The Hoogland Center is also home to the Springfield Area Arts Council, a nexus of information for artists of all stripes. A variety of organizations hold meetings at the Hoogland, thanks to its location, flexible accommodations and helpful staff. The Hoogland’s website provides an updated calendar of events and links to other area arts organizations.

Illinois College TheatreWorks

The producing arm of the Illinois College department of theater presents both faculty and student-directed work at the McGaw Fine Arts Center in Jacksonville.

Performances are held at both the UIS Performing Arts Center and at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Springfield, bringing live musical experiences to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Performing Arts Center, UIS
One University Plaza
Located on the campus of the University of Illinois Springfield, the Performing Arts Center (formerly Sangamon Auditorium) hosts more than 120 events each year, including conferences, debates, major concerts, plays, musicals and comedy shows. From Broadway shows to today’s popular musical stars, the Performing Arts Center hosts big name entertainment throughout the year.

Springfield Ballet Company
420 S. Sixth St.
Housed at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, this nonprofit ballet company has been entertaining and educating audiences since 1975. Three major productions are held at the UIS Performing Arts Center each year.

Springfield Municipal Band
Outdoor concerts in Douglas Park on Tuesdays from June through the first week in August, 7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.  Additional performances in other parks throughout the summer.  

Springfield Theatre Centre
420 S. Sixth St.
Housed at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, this local theater group has year-round performances as well as summer performing arts camps for children.

The Legacy Theatre
101 E. Lawrence
A bright addition to the Springfield theater scene in recent years is The Legacy Theatre, operated by a private group of volunteers that brought the long-shuttered Springfield Theatre Centre facility back to life. In addition to presenting shows by in-house company Roxy Theatricals and other local producers, The Legacy brings touring shows to Springfield and hosts concerts and movies in the intimate space.

The Springfield Muni
815 East Lake Shore Dr.
Enjoy locally produced musicals in an outdoor amphitheater near Lake Springfield all summer long. The Muni is one of the largest all-volunteer community theater organizations in the nation.

Theatre in the Park
15588 History Lane (Route 97), Petersburg
A nationally acclaimed repertory theater located at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site. The outdoor amphitheater offers a unique environment for a variety of performances throughout the summer.

University of Illinois Springfield Theatre Department
One University Plaza
Seasonal productions are presented at the Studio Theatre in the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus.

Visual arts

SAA Collective
420 S. Sixth St.
Housed at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, the SAA Collective holds regular rotating exhibitions in the H.D. Smith Gallery. More than 80 local artists have work on display and for sale in a wide variety of media. The SAA Collective is committed to fostering community awareness and participation in the visual arts while providing support for local emerging and professional artists.

James S. Murray Gallery
5250 Shepherd Rd.
Located on the campus of Lincoln Land Community College, the gallery exhibits creative work from a wide array of artists, including faculty and students.

M.G. Nelson Family Gallery
700 N. Fourth St.
Located on the campus of Springfield Art Association, the gallery’s monthly exhibitions range from traditional to contemporary, featuring a variety of visual arts from around the globe.

The Pharmacy Gallery & Art Space
623 E. Adams St.
A recent move to downtown has significantly expanded the space available to this gallery and art space, dedicated to cultivating and celebrating expressions of multidimensional artists. Features contemporary art and hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year.

Visual Arts Gallery - University of Illinois Springfield
One University Plaza
Located on the UIS campus in the Health and Sciences Building (Room 201), the gallery holds regular exhibits by visiting artists, faculty and students. Events are free and open to the public.
