At least 11 residents of a Sherman nursing home have died after an outbreak of the new coronavirus there infected dozens of residents and staff. On April 28, Sangamon County announced its highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in a day, 41. Two locations in Springfield offer tests at no cost and without a necessary appointment. As of last week, SIU Center for Family Medicine operates testing outside of a public health building (2833 S. Grand Avenue E.) from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. And an old Walgreens (1155 N. 9th St.) is open seven days a week 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sangamon County Department of Public Health director Gail O'Neill said, "The uptick in cases is from the increased number of places that people can test, and the availability and being able to test people with or without symptoms." As for whether the number of 41 confirmed cases in a single day will set a county record? "We certainly hope so," she said.
