Celebrate the start of Black History Month and Abraham Lincoln's upcoming birthday with a variety of events at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum starting this week. The month features performances of Small Beginnings, a short play about Robert Smalls. Smalls, escaping slavery, took a Confederate ship in 1862 and used it to transport family members and friends to freedom. After the Civil War, Smalls was elected to Congress. Local actor Reggie Guyton portrays Smalls. The performances are set for 1 p.m. Feb. 2-3, 6-7, 15-17 and 23-24. A Q&A will follow each show. Besides the play, the ALPLM is offering a film series of mini-documentaries on important Black Americans, a read-a-thon and a Feb. 15 program on Oscar Dunn, the first Black man to serve as a state executive officer. A special exhibit examines the history of Black sororities. And museum admission will be free Feb. 11-12 in honor of Lincoln's birthday.
