It’s amazing what can happen when lots of people come together with a common goal and a solid plan. On July 27, an estimated 200 volunteers will illustrate that fact by building an entirely new playground in a single day at Sojourn Shelter and Services, 1800 Westchester Blvd. Sojourn, a nonprofit shelter, offers protection and advocacy for victims of domestic violence from Sangamon, Logan, Menard, Christian and Montgomery counties. The playground was designed with input from kids, and volunteers from Sojourn, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois and the community at large will be doing the work under the guidance of Kaboom!, a nonprofit specializing in building playgrounds. Kaboom! previously oversaw a similar single-day playground project at Springfield’s Gehrmann Park in September 2010. The July 27 build starts at 8:30 a.m. and is scheduled to finish by 2:30 p.m., which is an amazing testament to the power of community involvement. To volunteer, call 217-726-5100, extension 213.
