A nationwide demonstration calling for gun legislation reform will be held at the Lincoln statue in front of the State Capitol this Saturday, March 24, at noon. Begun by student survivors of the Feb. 14 shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the local event is part of a nationwide demonstration called “March for Our Lives” which will be taking place simultaneously in Washington, D.C., and many other locations throughout the country. Student organizers have planned the march in collaboration with a nonprofit organization called Everytown for Gun Safety, whose mission statement is to “support efforts to educate policy makers, as well the press and the public, about the consequences of gun violence and promote efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.” The Springfield event is being organized by area activist group Action Illinois, a 501c4 organization.
