Together with Illinois Symphony Orchestra musicians, the Springfield Choral Society will attempt to capture the breadth of the Psalms' significance for musicians and for people more broadly: In meaning, from the ecstatic praise of Psalm 150 ("let everything that breathes praise the Lord!") to the homesick lamentation of Psalm 137 ("by the rivers of Babylon we sat down and wept"). In style, from languid Renaissance polyphony to in-your-face Shapenote song, from the jazzy grooves of Bernstein to the tangy discords of Ives. And in geography, from Ukraine to Jamaica and much in between. A Book of Psalms kaleidoscopic journey through time and space.
