APL to host Tree of Lights open house
The Animal Protective League (APL) invites the public to honor a loved one, animal or human, with a memorial light on APL’s annual Tree of Lights. For each $5 donation to APL, a small white light will be placed on the tree in the memorial garden on APL’s grounds. All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit organization’s sick, injured, abused or abandoned cats and dogs.
APL will host its annual Tree of Lights open house on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 12-5:30 p.m. at its shelter, located at 1001 Taintor Road in Springfield. The public is invited to enjoy refreshments, tour APL facilities and meet adoptable cats and dogs. The official tree lighting will be held at 5:30 p.m. and includes special poem readings and a brief invocation from Rev. David P. Byer of Saint Joseph Anglican Church.
Tree of Lights messages may be submitted through Dec. 31 and will be published on a special page on APL’s website and in a display during the open house.
Christmas for kittens
Flea Market to Fabulous is partnering with Forever Home Feline Ranch to “jam the Jeep” with supplies. Donations of cat and kitten food, litter, bedding, toys and treats can be dropped off at 118 W. Lawrence Ave. in Springfield through Friday, Dec. 21.
The event kicked off on Black Friday with a visit from two 12-week-old sister kittens who were both adopted by customers within 48 hours. Owner Jodi Cole explained, “Our very popular shop cat, Tigger, came from the Forever Home Feline Ranch four years ago. We’re an animal-loving business that supports rescues, and our customers are very giving.”
Cole said, “Sometimes cats get a bad reputation for being finicky animals, but that doesn’t have to be the case.” She hopes to be able to promote additional adoptions, along with collecting supplies, to help support the work of Forever Home Feline Ranch.
Merry K-9 Christmas
Santa Claus will be visiting the Riverton Police Department on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 12-2 p.m. to give you a chance to take photos of Santa with your pet. The $5 donation will help support Friends of Sangamon County Animal Control and Paws For Life. Treat bags will be given to all dogs while supplies last. The pet entrance is on the east side of the building, which is located at 1200 East Riverton Rd. in Riverton.
