Hendricks Home Furnishings

Jeff Hendricks likes to say that Hendricks Home Furnishings in Virden is a destination store for furniture.

Now celebrating its 70th year in business, the Hendricks family believes in building friendships with its customers. “Once you’re a customer, you’re a customer for life,” says Jeff, who notes that some people have been customers for decades. “We sell to peoples’ great-grandkids.”  Yet, Jeff said some people walk in and say, “We didn’t know you were here.”

This third-generation, family-owned furniture, mattress and flooring store originally started as a Gambles Variety Store – which later became True Value Hardware – and sold a variety of merchandise, including furniture, appliances, hardware, sporting goods and guns. Furniture and appliances were the biggest sellers, and in 1958 the family opened Hendricks Home Furnishings at its current location.

The 46,000-square-foot store recently reopened after closing for 17 weeks when a car crashed into the side of the building and caught on fire. Fortunately the fire was contained to the car, and there was no structural damage to the building. However, the entire stock of inventory was a total loss. “We completely redid the store,” says Jeff.

When asked what he enjoys most, Jeff says it’s getting to talk to a lot of people. “We’re in this to help people,” he said, and some of the staff has been with them for more than 40 years. “Everything we do, we do for our customers.”
