At last week's meeting of the Citizens Club of Springfield, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lisa Holder White was asked: Does the absence of ethical standards for the U.S. Supreme Court lead to a decline in public trust for the court? "The justices of the U.S. Supreme Court have a lifetime appointment," she answered. "That probably plays a role in the absence of any ethical code to which they must adhere. That must be a pretty comfortable spot to be in. We [on the Illinois Supreme Court] have a judicial code of conduct. I think that is appropriate. To whom much is given, much is required. We have a higher calling; we have higher responsibility. I don't have a problem with having to live my life, personally and professionally, in a certain way because of this position that I have the privilege of having. If I were deciding, I'd say they should have an ethical code. But they haven't asked me." – Fletcher Farrar, editor
