A year ago, Mayor Jim Langfelder in his state of the city address talked about streamlining the city’s approach to requests for public records. Now, the city is saying that drafts of an environmental study on Hunter Lake (rhymes with “money sinkhole”) required by the Army Corps of Engineers won’t be shared with the public because, the city argues, the state Freedom of information Act doesn’t require it. We’re not sure what the law requires, but we do know one thing: We’re spending a bazillion dollars on this pipe dream, and when that money is in play, the folks paying the bills should be allowed to see the ciphering. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
