Editor's note

Members of Springfield's ICON – Inner City Older Neighborhoods – have taken time to dream big while picking up litter, dealing with problem properties, attending every city council meeting and continuing to push for garbage pickup reform when most others have given up. Now in its 10th year, the lobbying group used its annual fundraiser dinner this week to showcase some new ideas, including a proposal for a new homeless center complex (see page 6). Another presentation, by Chris Richmond, retired city fire marshal, made demolition of the former Pillsbury Mills plant seem possible and logical. This group doesn't grump; it leads with the slogan, "You don't have to move to live in a better neighborhood." –Fletcher Farrar, editor and CEO
