Even for us in the news business, sometimes no news is good news. It’s been a month since Illinois became the first state to eliminate cash bail, and we haven’t yet heard much about much going wrong. Dangerous arrestees still await trial in jails, which are less crowded now. That’s because those who before the new law couldn’t afford bail, now wait at home for their court dates. The system won’t be perfect; experts say it will take three to six months to get a good assessment so tweaks can be proposed. But so far so good. And here’s hoping Illinois will lead the nation into pretrial fairness reform. – Fletcher Farrar, editor
