Wars are easy to get into and hard to get out of. I remember the Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 2001, when President George W. Bush launched an intense bombing attack on Afghanistan's major cities. It was inexplicable except as a retaliation for the Sept. 11 attacks, though no case had been made that the attackers were in Afghanistan. It was just a wild move by a president who had to do something soon or be blamed for a failure of leadership. Now, 20 years later, the withdrawal is as abrupt and messy, prompting cries of "failure of leadership." Real leaders won't forget Afghanistan now, and will keep the U.S. involved through intelligence, diplomacy and aid, to help build a peace without bombs and troops. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and CEO
