David Hinds

This year's cover, "Welcome to Springfield," is by David Hinds of Springfield, winner of this year's Capital City Visitor cover art contest, which drew more than 40 entries. Hinds and the other entrants will have their artwork on display at the Old State Capitol beginning April 24, and cash prizes were awarded to the top three winners.

Hinds is a self-taught artist who works predominantly in pastels after observing folk artist George Colin's mastery of the medium. George and his wife, Winnie, were treasured neighbors and friends. Hinds grew up on a farm situated between Lincoln's New Salem and Springfield and has many fond memories to draw from, including summer vacation adventures across America in the family's tiny camper.

Hinds shares his love of art with his wife, Lynn Snyder-Hinds, whose art graced the cover of the 2019-2020 Capital City Visitor. Hinds says he is still experimenting and learning as he goes, and the best compliment is hearing his work brings happiness to those viewing it. He hopes his "Welcome to Springfield" piece reflects that every day is a celebration in the Land of Lincoln.
