Cancer survivor, award-winning author, editor and authority on cancer healing, Dr. Julie Silver, will be the featured speaker at a free public event in January at Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.
Silver will speak on “Hope, Resilience and a Happy Life: Thoughts on Surviving and Thriving,” at the free public symposium to be held from 5:30 – 7 p.m., Thursday, January 31 at Simmons Cancer Institute, 315 W. Carpenter St. The event is part of SCI’s continuing free Community Cancer Wellness Education Program.
Registration for the program is available by calling 217-545-3837 or online at www.siumed.edu/cancer.
Silver is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and a noted expert in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Silver is the chief editor of books at Harvard Health Publications, the consumer health branch of Harvard Medical School.
She is the co-founder of Oncology Rehab Partners, which has advanced the Survivorship Training And Rehab (STAR) Program. The program helps hospitals and cancer centers develop survivorship services through the implementation of the STAR Program.
Following her acute treatment for cancer while in her thirties, Silver realized “there was a large gap in helping survivors heal after treatment.” According to her website, Silver worked to perfect healing techniques to speed her own recovery.
The recipient of numerous awards for her work, Silver was presented with the most prestigious honor bestowed by the American Cancer Society, The Lane Adams Quality of Life Award. She has been featured in Parade Magazine, National Public Radio, The Today Show, USA Today, Newsweek and other major media outlets.
One of Silver’s books will be available at the event: “What Helped Get Me Through: Cancer Survivors Share Wisdom and Hope.” Her other books include: “Hope and Healing for Your Breast Cancer Journey,” “You Can Heal Yourself, A Guide to Physical and Emotional Recovery After Injury or Illness” and “After Cancer Treatment, Heal Faster, Better, Stronger.”
Doors will open at 5 p.m. Funding support has been provided by PNC Bank.
The mission of Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU is to serve the people of central and southern Illinois by addressing their present and future cancer needs through education, research, patient care and community service. Its website is www.siumed.edu/cancer.
