Play Reception and Reading

Saturday February 02,2013

420 S. Sixth St
217-523-2787

Big Dog Plays and Norman Maine Plays have published three plays written by award winning area playwright, Kari Catton. The Sparkle Miser, The Track Home and Healin’ Home are published as part of the 2012-2013 catalog from these publishers and listed under New Arrivals.

A reception will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, 1-4 p.m. in the Club Room at the Hoogland Center for the Arts in Springfield. A few of her plays will be on hand for sale.

“I have been trying for over twenty-five years to have a piece published. Now I have three published in one year. I am thrilled. Big Dog Plays represents Plays for Youth around the country,” says Catton. “They were a natural fit for plays I write which include children as actors. Norman Maine Plays, a sister publisher, asked if they could publish the plays as well. “

During the reception, a staged reading of The Track Home: The Musical will be featured from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Twenty-four actors, including 11 children, will sing and read. The reception and reading is free to the public.

“Scott Shaw-Smith has composed original music for The Track Home: The Musical, the story of eleven children on the Orphan Train. We started this project about four years ago. It is time to hear it. The reception seemed like the perfect opportunity to hear a new musical,“ states Catton.

Catton placed 9th in the Writer’s Digest, Play Category, 2007, with The Track Home. Catton received an Honorable Mention in the Jack White National Play Competition for Children in 2009 for Healin’ Home. Each of the plays has been produced at least once. Kari Catton has been with Theatre in the Park since 2004. She has directed numerous plays for TIP and the Springfield Theatre Center. She was involved extensively with Mid-America Playwrights Theatre from 1989-2000.
