701 N. First St
Category: Health

Memorial Medical Center’s Food and Nutrition Department will offer an 11-week course to help people learn how to conquer unhealthy eating habits.

The course, Choosing to Lose, will begin with a free introductory session at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the Florence Nightingale Conference Room (B-115), which is in the Capitol Zone on the hospital’s first floor. At the conclusion of the session, participants can decide if they want to enroll in the remaining 10 classes.

The course costs $240. The first half will be due at the end of the introductory session; the second half will be due Tuesday, Feb. 12. When participants enroll with a family member or friend, each will receive a $50 discount.

Choosing to Lose classes will be led by a clinical dietitian with Memorial Medical Center. The hour-long classes will start at 5 p.m. Tuesdays in the Florence Nightingale Conference Room. One class will be held at Fitness Together, 4481 Ash Grove Drive, Springfield.

“Choosing to Lose teaches people how to make permanent lifestyle changes and prepares them for long-term success,” said Gayle Jennings, a clinical dietitian at Memorial Medical Center.

Topics that will be covered include emotional eating, portion control and dining out, weight loss myths and fad diets, fat and cholesterol in foods, limiting portion sizes, and maintaining your weight loss.

“The goal of a healthy weight management regimen is to reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, sleep apnea, certain cancers and osteoporosis,” Jennings said. “Our participants learn how to lower their risk factors for these diseases and develop healthy lifestyle habits that ultimately lead to weight loss and better overall health.”

Seating is limited. To register, call (217) 788-3333. For more information, email jennings.gayle@mhsil.com.
