This week marks the return of the Torch Tuesday hip-hop concert series, featuring a local favorite, a consummate up-and-comer and a visitor from up North. Headlining the show is Black Steel (a.k.a. Young Twizz). "I wouldn't call it gangsta rap, but he raps about his experiences and what he has witnessed, so there's stuff about growing up around drug dealers, seeing people getting shot," explains Torch Tuesday host Aaron "Uncanny" Phillips, who will also join Black Steel tonight to spit some verses.Listen To Black Steel give shout-outs to a large portion of the local hip-hop scene on the track "Community" here:
Phillips describes Symun Sez, also on the bill tonight, as "definitely a rapper's rapper, an artist's artist. He is very clever in his rhyming and also, he's very choosey about his beats, he won't just jump on any beat and start rhyming." All these qualities are on display on the track "Out the Trunk":
Bubble Eye is a rapper from Chicago who is gracing the Torch Tuesday stage for the first time, a testament to the increasing reach of the "little hip-hop night that could." Check out Bubble Eye's video here:
For his part, Phillips is pleased with the way Torch Tuesday has been progressing in 2013. "Ever since the hip-hop awards it's really lit a fire under some of the artists who feel they were overlooked or that they should have won. People are coming with new music every week," he smiles. "People are really getting back into the swing of it."
