in 1924 my grandfather writes
his freshman son about
that son’s new possession:
“Regarding your car, cut it out.
You are better off without it.
What you need is to develop
quiet strength and poise of
mind and character. The car
tends to develop just the
opposite qualities. Walk and
think and grow great. I do not
want you to use a car in
Madison. Sell it and walk.”
