19th century soldiers

By Anita Stienstra

An impressive Civil War exhibit fills the first and second floors of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library during 2012. Weekdays, visit the display titled, “Illinois Answers the Call: Boys in Blue.” The vast collection features artifacts such as letters, diaries, sketches, songs and the faces of Illinois soldiers including African-American regiments. Highlights are an original battle flag from the Battle of Corinth and an enormous awe-inspiring photo of area soldiers by 19th century photographer Mathew Brady. If you viewed the popular 2011 exhibit that ignited this second installment, you need to go again – all the images and artifacts are new. Further information about the Presidential Library can be found at www.presidentlincoln.org.
