Cabin Fever

By Tom Irwin

In 2005 this hardworking, easy-playing quintet of Zach Johnson (vocals, harmonica), Mike Eck (vocals, guitar), Danny Sronce (vocals, guitar), Geoff Ryan (electric bass) and Justin Schmidt (percussion, banjo) joined together to play true blues, country- and folk-based music in the Americana genre. With songs ranging from freshly penned originals to deep-rooted traditionals and covering artists such as John Prine, the Rolling Stones, The Band, Bob Dylan and Amos Lee, Cabin Fever uses the vast and undermined collection of American roots music to create a warm and fuzzy feeling that sneaks under the skin with familiarity and hangs around to elevate the mood and the mind. The band recently performed at First Night and begins recording this February for a summer debut release. Occasionally band performances include the horn section of Frank Trompeter (saxophones) and A.J. Good (trumpets) and other well-positioned guests. A bluesy acoustic offshoot of the band includes Ryan, Johnson and Sronce as Murder of Crows, appearing at Bob’s Butternut Hut on Jan. 6 and Jan. 20 at Harry’s Adult Daycare.

What is with this picture!? That sax player you show hardly every plays in the band, and what's up with the bizarre mix-up of his chin and the bottom half of the guitar neck--was that on purpose?

Too bad it's not a good picture of studly front man Zach Johnson, possibly the most iimportant person to show in a "band picture" like this. Maybe you can find a way to publish another picture some time. Something that shows the band.
