TRASH IT, THE RIGHT WAY

By Cap City
Medicine cabinet overflowing with expired prescriptions? Don’t know what to do with the bulky television you replaced with a sleek flatscreen? Consider October your lucky month.

The Sangamon County Department of Public Health and Vintage Tech Recyclers are hosting a free household electronics collection on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Lot 21.

Just stick the unwanted electronics (a list of acceptable items is available at www.scdph.org) in the car or truck and drive into the fairgrounds through Gate 11.

The following weekend, on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Prevention First, the Springfield Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will be accepting old, unwanted prescription drugs to prevent drug abuse by keeping them from getting into the wrong hands.

The prescription drug collection will take place at the Prevention First office at 2800 Montvale Drive, where Prevention First and Illinois Students Against Destructive Decisions will also be distributing educational materials.

The collection is part of the third national Rx Drug Take-Back Day. The last local effort resulted in the collection of 558 pounds of prescription drugs. For more information about Take-Back Day, visit www.prevention.org.
