Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-fonics

By Tom Irwin

Hailing from nearby Columbia, Mo., Deke Dickerson has toured the world as an entertaining guitarist and developed an international career as a journalist/historian in the arena of American roots music. No stranger to Springfield, Dickerson was an early participant in the Sangamon Valley Roots Revival and continues to stop by the capital city when his incessant touring brings him back to our neck of the woods.  His latest record, The King of the Whole Wide World, contains a few killer rockabilly songs, the genre he is best known for performing, but overall the album is a tour-de-force of original American music forms. Song styles include bluegrass, rhythm and blues, Western swing, Memphis soul and doo-wop, showcasing the varied and intense talents of this true American music treasure. All that, and he’s a barrel of monkeys to see perform, playing a show filled with phenomenal music backed with surefire showmanship. Yup, you should come see ol’ Deke behind the guitar for sure with Chris “Sugarballs” Sprague, and Jimmy Sutton as the Ecco-fonics.
