Reduce, recycle, reuse

By Anita Stienstra

Before kids get back to the three Rs – reading, writing and arithmetic – take them back and revisit the other three Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle. Aug. 13 at the Illinois State Museum, families with kids ages 4-8 can create a stained glass gift for a teacher using recycled crayons, make a pocket notebook from a reused postcard, play the zero waste lunch matching game, jump along the back-to-green hopscotch and learn how to shop and travel back to school in a way that reduces our harm to the environment. Super Saturdays offers free ongoing activities that take approximately 30 minutes to complete, and feature take-home crafts. Registration is not required. Back to Green is sponsored by the Band of Springfield.
