TLC FOR VETS' TEETH

By Cap City
Military veterans in Sangamon County will soon have something to smile about. Qualified veterans are eligible for vouchers that would cover a teeth cleaning, examination and assessment by a dentist of their choice.

To pay for the program, the Sangamon County Veteran’s Assistance Commission received a $35,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Veteran’s Affairs April 12. It is the first of its kind in Sangamon County. Veterans must fill out an application and provide proof of their military service. Veterans who qualify must also make less than $11,830 for a single individual and less than $15,493 if married of have a child. If veterans do not have a dentist, the SCVAC can refer them to the city’s health department.

“It’s providing a service that’s not being offered,” says John Farrow, superintendent of the Sangamon County Veteran’s Assistance Commission. Farrow says that veterans are usually referred to Catholic Charities for dental care.

Veterans can apply at the office of the Sangamon County Veteran’s Assistance Commission at 200 S. 9th St. in Room 301 or call the office at 753-6680.
