Dale Armstrong with Ronnie Engel

By Tom Irwin

In honor of National Drum Month, Prairie Drum presents two world-class drummers with roots in central Illinois in an evening of entertainment and education. Dale Armstrong, a Bloomington native, moved to Nashville 30 years ago and made his mark as one of the most sought after studio and live drummers in Music City, USA. Armstrong appeared on hundreds of recordings in many genres, logging sessions and live work with the likes of Leon Russell, Mose Allison, Vince Gill, Edgar Winter, Pam Tillis, Crystal Gayle, Steve Winwood and many more. Ronnie Engel, originally from the Athens/Fancy Prairie area, spent years in the LA area as a popular hand drummer studying and performing with the masters. He worked with the Harry Partch Ensemble, composers Jon Hassell and Lou Harrison and fellow percussionists John Bergamo, Vinnie Colaiuta, Rick Kavistad and Kobla Ladzepko. Hugh Moore of WQNA’s Fly-Over Zone hosts the clinic as these master drummers show their stuff and show you how to, too.
