BIG BUCKS

By Cap City
Want a piece – a BIG piece – of the John Deere company’s history? Now’s your chance. An eight-foot long, eight-foot tall buck sculpture commissioned by John Deere’s son in 1893 is up for auction next weekend at H.A.S. Auction of Virden.

Charles Deere was the president of the Deere Company from 1887 to 1907, during which time he asked W.H. Mullins of  Ohio to make 20 zinc and copper statues portraying a leaping buck. According to H.A.S., 14 of the statues are in the John Deere Museum in Moline.

Tiffany Stark, with H.A.S., says the statue up for auction used to rest atop a John Deere dealership in Cortez, Colo.

An auction preview will take place on Friday, Oct. 29, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. as well as on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Auctions follow each preview. H.A.S. is located at Mansion 55 Expo 34382 East Frontage Road, just off Interstate 55.
