Poet, professor and presidential aficionado Dan Guillory is taking his work to China later this month. Professor emeritus of English at Millikin University in Decatur, the author and Illinois Times contributor will be bringing the life and lore of Abraham Lincoln to students in Taiwan at the Tunghai University in Taichung.
The University expects 50 to 75 students to attend his two scheduled Lincoln lectures, entitled “Abraham Lincoln as a Lifelong Learner, Lincoln as the Ideal” and “Abraham Lincoln as a Symbol of the Liberal Arts in His Oratory, Writing and Political Action.” Two more lectures, focused on the English language and digital technology and on the liberal arts’ relationship to teaching, are expected to bring in a crowd of 700 or 800 students.
Guillory has penned eight books, including an anthology of his own Lincoln poems and most recently People and Places in the Land of Lincoln [see “Hundreds of Lincoln places,” by Julie Cellini, Illinois Times, Aug. 26, 2010].
