New York art doesn’t pop up in Springfield too
often, but thanks to a biannual fundraiser hosted by Planned Parenthood
Springfield, locals get a chance to see and buy a range of works from a
renowned Big Apple gallery.
PPS’s Art Auction is a large affair boasting
200 framed-and-matted art works, courtesy of New York City’s Ross
Gallery. The list of featured works hasn’t been finalized, but past
shows have included prints of works by Pablo Picasso and Pierre Auguste
Renoir, as well as an array of sports, music, and entertainment
memorabilia. Planned Parenthood will be taking requests for particular
artists and pieces until Friday. Patrons should plan on spending anywhere
from $50 to $300 per artwork, depending on the artist and the size.
It’s a great way to get art on the cheap, says Claudia
Cipolla-Pruitt, administrative coordinator for PPS, who notes that opening
bids go as low as 50 percent of traditional live-auction prices.
The art auction is one PPS’s biggest
fundraisers; Cipolla-Pruitt says that 150-200 attendees are expected this
year, up from the record of 170. This year’s event is the 15th
installment.
The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a preview and a
wine-and-hors d’oeuvres hour, during which patrons may view the art
and scope out the pieces they want to bid on when the auction begins at 7
p.m.
This year’s Art Auction will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Illinois Department of Transportation, 2300 S. Dirksen Parkway. Call Cipolla-Pruitt at 217-544-8790, ext. 208, to make a special request for art. Tickets, which may be purchased by phone, cost $10 per person.
