knoepfle 9-2-04

By John Knoepfle

sandalwood poem #17

I circle this table
I do not come back to the place
where I began
though I want to
say that I do

perhaps you are the one
who is constant really
a red warning light
that never changes

I want to go a long way
where I will find myself
not as in a mirror
but as that other man who comes
from the other side of time
who will merge with my spirit
and achieve my body

I will wear him
laughing when I return to you
coming back to the old place

that was not mine
