Aunt Catherine was born on Nov. 6, 1919. She was not a famous poet, actress, singer, dancer or celebrity. She was our Aunt.
She married Thomas Calwell in 1949. He preceded her in death in 2007. They had twin sons that died shortly after birth. Never again were Tommy and Catherine blessed with children. Instead, they loved and were loved by nieces, nephews, great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
In recent years, Aunt Catherine hosted a family reunion once a year at her home. The memories of those reunions will be in our hearts forever.
Catherine was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. She always watched them play from the comforts of her living room or kitchen. She had never seen them play live until 2010 at the age of 90. Her great nieces and nephews took her to Busch Stadium. It was a dream come true. While she didn’t get any autographs, she did get to see her Molina, Pujols, Holliday and the rest of the Cardinal regulars.
Aunt Catherine loved to have a good time and would occasionally join us nieces and nephews at the local VFW for a few beers. It wasn’t unusual to find her on the dance floor, busting a move or getting her groove on.
She passed away on Nov. 26, 2012, at the age of 93. She will always be remembered for her wit, love for family, love for God and country and love for life. She often said, “Who has more fun than us?”
While we miss her terribly, we know she is happy to be reunited with her husband, Tommy, her twin sons, mother, father, sisters and brothers. Rest in peace Catherine Bierbaum-Calwell.
