WE’RE IN THE MONEY

By Cap City
What do First Lady Michelle Obama, former Gov. George Ryan, the late Tim Davlin, basketball legend Michael Jordan and Illinois Times staff members have in common?

All have money waiting for them at the Illinois treasurer’s office.

State treasurer Dan Rutherford has made it his mission to get money to the oblivious, including Tenneco, a Lake Forest company that didn’t know that it had $8.1 million coming from a buyout of the Pullman Co. in 1996. Somehow, a lot of property didn’t get transferred in the deal, the state ended up with it and the company got a check this week.

All told, the treasurer oversees $1.6 billion in unclaimed assets. Davlin’s heirs are owed more than $100 that came from Health Care Service Corp. Obama is due between $10 and $100 from Aetna. Ryan is in line for less than $10 in McDonalds dividends. Jordan is due money from ADT Security he apparently overpaid for services, and from the Walt Disney Co. for wages, perhaps from appearing in all those commercials in which he proclaimed that he was going to Disney World.

Illinois Times staff writer Bruce Rushton, meanwhile, is due $49.32 from Pacific Bell Internet Services, which once kept him online at a house he hasn’t lived in since 2006. Editor Fletcher Farrar is owed between $10 and $100 from Epson America. You, too, might have money coming: Just go to www.icash.illinois.gov to find out.

Ka-ching!
